St. Vincent de Paul

St. Vincent de Paul church, on Nelson Street in Mitchell, was constructed in 1882 by Father Murphy of St. Columban at a cost of $8,000.00. This building, often referred to as “the beautiful little church at the edge of the park” replaced an earlier church which was located on Blanshard Street, south of Highway 8.

When St. Brigid’s church, Kennicott, was erected in 1897, St. Vincent de Paul was attached to it as a mission and was served by the pastor from St. Brigid’s.

Some years earlier, a Catholic cemetery was established on property just north of St. Vincent de Paul church. From 1897 on, it has served the families from St. Brigid’s as well.

The parish-mission arrangement between St. Brigid’s and St. Vincent de Paul continued until 1994 when the Diocesan directive to cluster parishes was implemented. At that time, St. Vincent de Paul was clustered with St. Patrick’s Parish at Dublin. In 1997, Bishop Sherlock granted parish status to St. Vincent de Paul.

Ongoing restoration and enhancements have been made to the church over the years. A parish hall was built in 1984 and attached to the north end of the church providing facilities for meetings and social events. Both the church and hall are wheel chair accessible. The overall appearance is one of simple beauty.

From its modest beginning of a few Catholic faithful, the congregation of St. Vincent de Paul has gradually grown over the years and is presently a good mix of young families and retirees.
