St. Patrick’s Restoration Project
Frequently Asked Questions
July
2004
Ø
As you
know the paint that was first applied failed to adhere to the plaster.
This paint was stripped of the plaster by the painting sub-contractor.
Ø
Various products have been tested to see if they adhere to the
plaster. Until
recently all products have failed the adhesion test.
Ø
We are
using the industry standard test.
Ø
The paint is applied as directed and allowed to dry.
Ø
The surface is scored with a knife to break the coating into
little squares
Ø
Green painter’s tape is applied and then removed.
Ø
If any paint square comes off the wall the paint fails the test.
Ø
A product known as Wall Grip initially passed the adhesion test.
Since we were pressed for time, it was agreed to proceed.
Ø
This product failed the adhesion test a few weeks later and it
continues to fail.
Ø
It is being removed and is almost all off.
Ø
All work
is being done under a general contract.
Ø
Any extra work must be outlined and approved before it is added to
the contract.
Ø
To date, all the extra labour and material costs to remove the
paint has been assumed by our general contractor RTM.
Ø
The
painting sub-contractor removed some of the Wall Grip.
Ø
RTM is not against using qualified volunteers to do specific jobs.
Ø
Volunteers were asked in to speed up the job.
Ø
Our volunteers did a quicker and better job.
Ø
We have
one product that has adhered to the plaster.
Ø
This product has not been tested over the long run.
Ø
As the summer proceeds the humidity will also increase making it
less favourable to paint.
Ø
The drainage report showed that we do not have any drainage problem to
worry about except surface water.
Ø
The
asbestos was removed during the last week of June.
Ø
We have
been stalled, waiting to find the best product for the job.
Ø
If we manage to do the painting this summer we won’t get at the
floor until October.
Ø
All
parties are leaning towards removing the scaffolding before the painting is
resumed and working on the floor first.
Ø
The scaffolding will be removed in the third full week of July.
Ø
Removal of pews, flooring and floor will begin at the end of July.
Ø
Concrete work will begin in September.
Ø
Heating and mechanical work will take place in October and
November.
Ø
It is hoped we will re-occupy an unpainted church by Christmas.
Ø
Smaller scaffolding and some moving scaffolding will be used in
spring to paint the entire church and finish the plaster on the lower levels.
Ø
We may be able to occupy the church while the painting is being
done.
Ø
RTM and our committee agree that volunteers are essential for keeping the
project on schedule and cost effective.
Ø
We have used volunteers to remove the wall grip.
Ø
We are looking for volunteers to help with the demolition work.
Ø
Volunteers could handle removing the flooring, floor and disposal.
Ø
This is at
the discretion of the contractor and sub-contractor who are in charge of the
work site.
Ø
(i.e.: I don’t know but I’ll find out)
Ø
Our
general contractor RTM prefers to use local sub-contractors to do the work.
Ø
They are approaching a local sub-contractor to do the floor and
various sub-contractors to do the heating and mechanical systems.
Ø
Midnight
Mass is booked for Christmas Eve 2004.
Ø
Yet
we may be able to be back in the church before that.
